With
South Carolina behind him and the anticipated Biden victory in the primary,
Sanders can now look forward to Super Tuesday and the rest of the nominating
campaign.
While
the Biden margin of victory was a bit larger than expected, the heavily skewed
demographics of South Carolina mitigate its impact.
The
real question for Bernie is who is his biggest threat? You might think its
Biden or maybe even Bloomberg, but I think Bernie’s biggest threat to winning
the nomination is the Democratic National Committee and the party power structure.
For
some insight check out:
The
New York Times article by Lisa Lerer and Reid J. Epstein: Democratic
Leaders Willing to Risk Party Damage to Stop Bernie Sanders.
Quoting
from the New York Times article “Dozens of interviews with Democratic
establishment leaders this week show that they are not just worried about Mr.
Sanders’s candidacy, but are also willing to risk intra party damage to stop
his nomination at the national convention in July if they get the chance.”
While
Sanders has repeatedly said he will support the nominee of the Party, I have
yet to hear a reporter or pundit ask him and have Bernie answer if he will
support the nominee of the DNC if the nomination is denied him by party
shenanigans.
It
takes 1,991 delegates to win the nomination and on the first ballot all pledged,
delegates are required to vote for the candidate they represent. If Sanders
does not get the 1,991 votes on the first ballot, all delegates are allowed to
vote for whoever they want on the second and all following ballots.
The
outward concern is the down ticket impact of a Sanders candidacy, whether he
defeats Trump or not.
There
has been no indication to this point that the Sanders camp is making any preparations
for Bernie’s name to be on the state presidential ballots as an independent and
time is running out.
For
now, Bernie is chugging along, but watch for the intensity of this political
campaign to ramp way up following Super Tuesday.
