The Media Manufactured Recession

 FLORIDA:
Opinion By: E. Eugene Webb PhD

How are you feeling about your economic status these days?

If you read the newspapers or watch television, you're probably feeling a bit depressed by all the recession talk. It seems the media, especially the far-left wing of the media, just cannot get enough of the "R" word.

We don't have to go back too far in history to remember when the phrase, "if you tell people a lie long enough, they'll start to believe it."

It almost seems like the Democratic Party, in the state of total disarray that they're currently in, has decided to help create a recession as a weapon against the Trump administration. They're also getting a lot of help from some of the big money players who are the ones that have been driving, the wild swings in the stock market this past week.

It seems the media is intent on scaring the public with the constant hammering on the sky is falling. Everything from your sneakers to your shampoo is going to be too expensive for you to afford. They've also got you scrutinizing your 401(k) or whatever investment platform you have for retirement and worrying about whether you're going to be able to retire. That's a genuine concern if you're at a retirement edge, but if you're 35 and making your financial, lifestyle, and political decisions based on the current status of your 401(k), you're probably going to end up disappointed.

So here are some thoughts for dealing with whatever the recession may end up being:

If it's made in China, just don't buy it. I don't care what it is or how much you want it, or you may even need it, but for the time being JUST DON'T BUY IT.

If there's a sign on the window of the new car, you're looking at that says something like tariff surcharge or tariff price adjustment simply don't buy the car. Don't argue with the guy or gal who's trying to sell it to you, they're just doing their job. Simply thank them. tell them you're not going to pay the tariff surcharge and walk out the door.

Watch your spending a little more closely, and if something appears to have gone up significantly, again, JUST DON'T BUY IT.

We live in a demand driven economy. The whole thing is based on the fact that companies manufacture things put them into the distribution chain and people literally suck them out the other end. So, when you stop buying the pipeline starts filling up, that's true from everything from cars and trucks and SUVs to imported Chinese clothing. If we all just simply quit buying, the stuff will start piling up and things will start changing fast. In fact, if you really want to help President Trump out just follow this little guide JUST QUIT BUYING.

I have been deeply disappointed in the media during this so-called trade war. We are in a different time. President Trump plays with a different scorecard. He doesn't follow all the political rules, and he knows the one thing that most politicians often ignore. The fact that it is all about the money.

As for groceries, try shopping the discount grocers. If you are embarrassed to be seen there, wear dark glasses and take an Uber. You will still come out ahead. In case you haven’t noticed it is not so much of a pleasure to shop where you normally shop.

So, just hang on for a while. I think there are going to be some embarrassed people at some of the major networks, especially the cable networks as this thing plays out.

And finally, don't fall for all the yelling and screaming on the Cable News Networks about the sky is falling - it isn't. Do any those people predicting the end of life, as we know it, look familiar? Of course not. The cable people had to dig them out of the woodwork, polish up their dialog and repaint their sandwich boards. The end is NOT near.
